Working with a Master Plan

Private Residence, St. Michaels, MD
2010 Design/Build Award Winner

A comprehensive master plan can be an excellent investment before starting any landscape project. The cost for a master plan is relatively low compared to construction costs. “Utilizing a master plan through the planning process, you can be sure that all of your landscape investments will be geared towards your family’s long-term goals for the property.”-Tom Nugent, ASLA, Residential Sales Consultant, Chapel Valley Landscape.

The value of the design investment in a master plan, like the value of any construction investment, will depend on the quality of the final product. It is critical to choose a reputable company when entertaining a landscape design. Look for design companies that are members of professional organizations and accredited by these organizations. Also, it is always critical to check references and take a tour of a company’s completed jobs. The references and examples of work will help you determine a company’s capabilities.

Accreditations to look for include: ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) and CPH (Certified Professional Horticulturist).

Memberships to look for include: PLANET (Professional Landcare Network) and LCA (Landscape Contractors Association)

The above accreditations and memberships are indications of a commitment to professionalism and training.
